Kevin Patterson's Guide for the Austin Endurance Warrior

Pure Austin Splash-n-Dash - 750m swim and a 3k run. April to September, third Tuesday of the month at 6:00p. $15 per race or $75 for the series.

Notes - Great water, old quarry, clear and warm. Run course is around the quarry and is three laps. Fast field, but not too large. Good monthly fitness check-up. Free Hotdogs, chip, cookies, soda and beer.

Blue Norther - 14mi bike, 5k run. Sun March 11, 2012, Seguin, TX on the campus of Texas Lutheran University. 5k run. $50 until Feb 29, $70 March 1 - 10, $80 day of race.

Notes - Good early season fitness test. Fast, flat, two lap 5k course, Bike is rolling hills. Small field. No frills or extras.

Sprint Triathlons

The Rookie - 300m swim , 11mi bike, 2 mile run. Sunday, 6 May 2012. Decker Lake. $85 until 4/6. $95 until race day.

Notes - Not my most favorite of races. It is expensive for what it is. Decker Lake is fine to swim in. The Bike course is basically the course for the Decker Half Marathon, so hilly. Run is ok.  Large field.

Lake Travis Triathlon - 500m swim, 20k bike, 5k run.  April race Date TBD. Pace Bend Park. $40 early bird.

Notes - Challenging swim. Lake Travis can be very choppy. Long run from swim to transition. Carry bike from transition to road. 2 loop bike course with some rolling hills and sharp turns. Run is on trails and some gravel.

Lake Pflugerville Triathlon - 500m, 14mi bike, 5k run.  June 24th, Father’s Day, 7:30a start. $65.00.

Notes - Field is limited to 750 and it does sell out. Good open water swim. Water can be choppy. Rolling hill bike course. Run is flat and around the lake with no shade. Well run race.

Marble Falls Triathlon - 1k swim, 23mi bike, 4.4mi run. Mid-July, 7:00a start. $75.00 early bird.

Notes - Hybrid Triathlon. Longer than a sprint. River swim water is usually warm, Bike course is challenging with lots of hills, it is the hill country after all. Run course is pretty flat and boring as it snakes through a neighborhood nearby and finishes in the park. The finish line is up hill. Well run. Good bridge race to prepare for an Olympic Triathlon.

Acquarena Springs Triathlon - 500m swim, 14mi bike, 5k run. Late September, Put on by the Rotary Club of San Marcos. $75.00.

Notes - I have not done this race, but I have heard nothing but good things about it. The swim is in a gorgeous lake, the bike course is pretty flat and the run is flat as well. Small field I’m told.

Olympic Distance Triathlons

Wool Capital Triathlon - 1.5k swim, 40k bike, 10k run, San Angelo, TX, 12 August 2012, 7:30a start. $65.00.

Notes - The oldest Olympic distance Triathlon in the southwest. 25 years old this year. Great swim in the concho river. Water is very warm. Transition area is on a boat ramp so it is right there when you get out of the water. Bike course is fast and flat with a tail wind that pushes you back to transition. Run course is the “Road to Hell” 6miles of red dust trail on a steady grade in no shade! Raced is staffed by the marine corps so no bitching! Good swag. Race is run to perfection. Race hotel is the La Quinta and there is a race discount. For 2012 Jack has talked about adding a sprint triathlon as well. This is my favorite race! Cost is chep and the field is small, around a 165 people total.

TriRock Austin Triathlon - 1.5k swim, 40k bike, 10k run. Lady Bird Lake, Labor Day Weekend. $150.00.

Notes - Formerly Avia Austin Triathlon, now reborn as TriRock Austin in 2012. Huge field, expensive. swim is OK, generally a wetsuit swim. Bike course is three loops in downtown area. This is also a sprint that weekend that is a first race for a lot of people and they share the same course so there is lots of cursing going on! Run course is two loops of streets and grass. Good swag. If you want to do a big one, I guess this is it.
